Wyden Statement on New York Times Reporting on Opportunity Zones, Secretary Mnuchin

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on Oct. 28, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement in reaction to New York Times’ reporting on Opportunity Zones:

“Groundbreaking reporting from the New York Times reveals that Secretary Mnuchin steered tax breaks worth potentially millions of dollars to a longtime crony-over the strong objection of nonpolitical IRS staff. This is an egregious example of corruption that demands a serious congressional investigation. Republicans who support the Opportunity Zone program should want to ensure the Treasury secretary is not allowed to abuse the program and enrich his friends at taxpayers’ expense."
