Levin, Stark Criticize Passage of Republicans' $25 Billion Middle Class Tax Increase

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on March 3, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON -- Today, Republicans in the House passed legislation that would raise taxes on the middle class by $25 billion. Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander M. Levin (D-MI) and Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Pete Stark (D-CA), criticized passage of the Republican tax increase:

Ranking Member Levin: “This bill would saddle hundreds of thousands of middle-income taxpayers with a hefty tax increase. We all favor repealing 1099, but to do so on the backs of the middle class is irresponsible. With this legislation, Republicans continue their reckless overreach, this time by gouging middle-income taxpayers."

Ranking Member Stark: "Republicans have taken an area of agreement and rejected bipartisanship by choosing to tax middle class families. All of us want to resolve this 1099 problem. But to do so on the backs of middle income working Americans is flat out wrong."
