Levin, Becerra to Republican Leader Cantor-If Social Security is Good Enough for Today's Seniors, It's Good Enough for the Next Generation

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on March 30, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC- Today, Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander M. Levin (D-MI) and Social Security Subcommittee Ranking Member Xavier Becerra (D-CA), responded to the statement by House Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) regarding Social Security : “So we've got to protect today's seniors. But for the rest of us?... We're going to have to come to grips with the fact that these programs cannot exist if we want America to be what we want America to be."

Ranking Member Levin: “I couldn’t disagree more with the Republican Majority Leader when he says that Social Security ‘cannot exist’ in the future. He goes so far as to suggest that he would not protect the program for even those on the cusp of retirement, let alone our children and grandchildren. Americans for decades have paid into this vital program and at every turn we will fight to ensure Republicans don't gut Social Security and that we take steps to preserve it for future generations."

Ranking Member Becerra: “Earth to the Republican Majority Leader: we cannot be the country ‘we want America to be’ without Social Security and the dignity it affords tens of millions of Americans every day. Americans young and old want us to strengthen Social Security, not destroy it. It’s time to stop raiding Social Security in the name of deficit reduction."
