Ways and Means GOP Votes to Add $310 Billion to Deficit

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on April 29, 2014. It is reproduced in full below.

Ways and Means Committee Republicans today voted to make 6 tax provisions permanent without any offset to the $310 billion cost of the measures, as estimated by the Joint Committee on Taxation. To put that figure into context, here’s how much it represents:

* More than 1/2 of this year’s projected $492 billion deficit

* Nearly 2/3 of the total annual spending on all non-defense, domestic discretionary spending

* 13 times the amount that it would cost to renew emergency unemployment insurance for the entire year. (It should be noted that the Senate bipartisan bill that House Republicans refuse to bring to the floor is fully paid for).

* More than 1 billion times the average $300 weekly unemployment insurance benefit for individuals who have lost their job through no fault of their own.
