WASHINGTON, DC - Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA) and Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ) today released the following statements after the United States formally filed a World Trade Organization (WTO) complaint against China regarding subsidies it has provided to certain aluminum producers:
“China’s heavy-handed industrial policies have been wreaking havoc on global markets for years," said Ranking Member Neal. “In the aluminum sector, China’s subsidies and other market-distorting measures have cost American workers jobs and shut down American production. The Administration’s action today is an important first step in holding China accountable at the WTO for its continuing failure to abide by the market-based norms of the global trading system. At the same time, this case only addresses China’s trade-distorting subsidies, and the next Administration will need to take further actions to address the other causes of China’s massive trade-distorting overcapacity problems."
“China poses the largest single threat to the continued strength and vibrancy of U.S. industrial manufacturing," said Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Pascrell. “I applaud today’s action, the first one any administration has taken to challenge China’s practice of propping up an unreasonably massive aluminum production industry with domestic subsidies. If anything, it has been too long in coming. I am excited to assume the role of Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member and look forward to following the development of this case in the coming weeks and months."
