WASHINGTON, D.C. - House Human Resources Subcommittee Chairman Adrian Smith (R-NE) announced today that the Subcommittee will hold a hearing entitled “The Geography of Poverty" on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 10:00 AM in room 1100 of the Longworth House Office Building. This hearing will examine how the geography of poverty has changed over time; the differences between urban, suburban, and rural poverty; and how efforts to address poverty may vary to account for geographical differences.
Upon announcing the hearing, Chairman Smith said:
“Too many Americans are still living in poverty. Despite an improving economy, more families are struggling today than before the recession began. Poverty looks different today than in the past-affecting more families living outside of cities and more working-age Americans. Understanding how poverty affects different communities will lay the groundwork for our efforts to help more Americans find jobs, escape poverty, and move up the economic ladder."
