Neal Statement on U.S.-Mexico Sugar Agreement in Principle

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on June 6, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA) today released the following statement after U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross and Mexican Secretary of Economy Ildefonso Guajardo announced a new “agreement in principle" for suspending antidumping and countervailing duties on Mexican sugar imported into the United States:

"Trade in sugar has been a longstanding matter of contention between the United States and Mexico. The recent efforts by Secretary Ross to negotiate a resolution are a step in the right direction. However, I urge the parties to come back to the table to strike a deal that benefits both the American public and our economy."
