Neal Statement on the Imposition of New Tariffs on Chinese Products

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on July 6, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Ways & Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA) released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s imposition of tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese products:

“Today’s imposition of tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese imports, and the potential additional tariffs on up to $400 billion of imports from China, still appear to be tools in search of a plan. The Trump Administration needs to explain its strategy to Congress and to the American people, including if these tariffs are going to be part of a protracted (trade) war of attrition. My colleagues and I have been asking our Republican counterparts for hearings on the Administration’s China strategy, to no avail. In the absence of an explanation of the Administration’s vision or any congressional hearings, the conclusion we are coming to is that the Administration has no strategy and that congressional Republicans are just fine with that."
