WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement on President Trump’s FY 2021 budget proposal:
“When I saw the President’s proposed budget today, I felt an immense sense of relief - relief that there is absolutely no chance of his ruthless cuts to critical programs ever becoming law. Slashing billions from Medicare and Medicaid will only make it harder for Americans to access the healthcare they need. Cutting nutrition assistance and Social Security benefits for the disabled won’t enable people to get back on their feet financially. Repealing incentives to reduce carbon emissions will hinder our fight against climate change and deter the kind of innovation our planet needs. And extending misguided tax cuts for the richest Americans will only deepen the deficit and further concentrate wealth at the top. It’s clear that the President lacks a basic understanding of Americans’ day-to-day lives, the challenges they face, and the concerns they have for their families.
“Democrats have a different vision for our nation’s future, one in which we support Americans’ access to necessities like affordable health care, safe housing, and good education. We want to ensure people can seize the opportunity our country promises, not encumber their ability to contribute to our society and economy. That opportunity to contribute is what we’re fighting for on the Ways and Means Committee, and we will continue to push back against the warped priorities President Trump’s budget represents."
