Neal, Davis Slam HHS Rule that Will Permit Discrimination

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on Dec. 17, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC- Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) and Ways and Means Worker and Family Support Subcommittee Chairman Danny K. Davis (D-IL) released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) finalized a rule allowing organizations receiving federal funds from nine federal agencies to discriminate against certain populations:

“While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread through our communities causing unthinkable devastation and grief, the Trump Administration has used precious time and resources finalizing this discriminatory rule to go into effect on their very last day in office. The shameful lack of focus on meeting the needs of the American people during this crisis puts some of the most vulnerable in our nation at risk.

“We have fiercely opposed this rule since its initial proposal earlier this year, and we are dismayed that the Trump Administration does not share our belief that federal funds should be used to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all Americans. We are committed to working with the Biden Administration to right this wrong and protect children and families from businesses’ and organizations’ discriminatory practices."
