Neal Statement on January 2022 Jobs Report

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on Feb. 4. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC- Today, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) January 2022 jobs report:

“These numbers defied predictions, showing that the strong economic recovery that began last year, supported by the American Rescue Plan Act and the determination of American workers, is continuing, even in the face of ongoing public health challenges. In 2021, we saw the largest year of job growth in our nation’s history, and the unemployment rate plummeted. Wages increased - a key factor driving the economic rebound - and layoffs remain near record lows. Under President Biden’s leadership, we are creating jobs, strengthening our supply chains, and building a more sustainable economy for all.

“In light of today’s positive news, it’s more important than ever to stay the course, get vaccinated, and wear a mask where appropriate so that we can continue to build on our progress. And I will keep pushing in Congress for critical worker supports - like guaranteed access to quality, affordable child care - to ensure that moving forward, the American economy comes out of this crisis even stronger than it was before the pandemic and truly works for working families and their employers."
