Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas gave a statement on the confirmation of Admiral Linda L. Fagan as the next U.S. Coast Guard commandant.

According to a May 12 Department of Homeland Security news release, Fagan will serve as the 27th commandant and was recently confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

“I am immensely proud to congratulate Admiral Linda L. Fagan on her historic confirmation as commandant of the United States Coast Guard. Admiral Fagan is an extraordinary leader, trailblazer and public servant," Mayorkas said in the release. "She is widely admired as a role model of the utmost integrity. I look forward to working with her as she leads the Coast Guard in its critical mission to protect our nation’s maritime security."

Mayorkas reported she has been in the coast guard for almost 40 years and will be the first woman to serve as commandant, according to the release.

Mayorkas also thanks Admiral Karl Schultz for his service as the 26th commandant.

"Admiral Schultz has devoted his life to public service, and he has led the Coast Guard to new heights during his extraordinary tenure as its commandant," Mayorkas said in the release.
