Lantos Posts on the Web the Full Transcript of Foreign Affairs Committee Hearing on Yahoo! and China

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on Jan. 16, 2008. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - Chairman Tom Lantos (D-CA) of the House Foreign Affairs Committee announced today that he has posted on the committee Web site a complete transcript of the November 6, 2007 hearing about Yahoo! Inc. and a Chinese journalist jailed after Yahoo! China furnished his identifying information to authorities.

"Internet users worldwide should have ready access to the committee's public proceedings where Yahoo's complicity in the Chinese repression apparatus is concerned," Lantos noted. "It will serve to remind this company and others always to place privacy rights well above the bottom line. Although this one hearing is over, when it comes to scrutinizing the activities of U.S. high-tech companies' activities in China, the case is far from closed."

The hearing, titled Yahoo! Inc.’s Provision of False Information to Congress, included testimony from Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang and General Counsel Michael Callahan. The hearing was called following the committee’s conclusion that Yahoo! officials provided false information to Congress in early 2006 regarding its role in a human rights case in China that sent journalist Shi Tao to jail for a decade.
