WASHINGTON, DC-Representative Eliot L. Engel, the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, made the following statement regarding the meeting between the leaders of the President of the Republic of China (ROC) Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in Singapore, the first such meeting since the Chinese civil war.
“This long anticipated summit breaks new ground in cross-strait relations. I sincerely hope that the discussion between President Ma and President Xi signals the beginning of substantive engagements between the two capitals that will continue regardless of who the Taiwanese people elect as their next leader.
“In addition, I hope that future engagement between Taipei and Beijing will contribute to the continued peace and prosperity across the strait, and that it will enhance Taiwan’s security, its thriving democracy, and the continued stability of cross-strait relations.".
