WASHINGTON-Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding Twitter’s announcement that 125,000 accounts were suspended for promoting or threatening terrorism.
“Twitter’s leaders are doing the right thing by making it harder for terrorists to exploit their platform. ISIS and other violent extremists have grown incredibly savvy at using social media to recruit fighters and spread propaganda. That’s why several colleagues and I have been working with Twitter and other social media outlets to crack down and deny terrorists this tool. The House also recently passed legislation calling for a new strategy from the Administration to combat terrorism on social media to look for new ways to collaborate with the private sector on this issue. Today’s announcement shows that we have a strong partner in Twitter, and I applaud the decision.".
