Engel Statement Regarding the Arrest of MP Robert Kyagulanyi

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on Jan. 6, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

“I strongly condemn today’s arrest and subsequently release of Ugandan member of parliament Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. Mr. Kyagulanyi has announced his intention to challenge President Museveni in the country’s elections next year, and this unwarranted arrest is clear intimidation bythe incumbent. For several years, the repeated harassment and detention of members of the opposition by the Government of Uganda has had a chilling effect on the climate for free and fair elections. Anyone running for office deservesa safe and honest space to campaign, and the people of Uganda deserve the right to choose their political leadership.".
