The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on March 19, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington-Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on the Department of State’s worldwide level 4 global health advisory.

“The State Department’s guidance that Americans not travel abroad due to the global impact of COVID-19 is an unprecedented step underscoring the seriousness of this pandemic. I urge all Americans to heed this advisory: stay home, and if you are abroad and seeking to return to the United States, make immediate arrangements to do so. I’m working closely with the Department to ensure that every effort is made for the safe return of American citizens looking to come home and I will continue to monitor this situation closely."

Background.

Americans traveling abroad at this time, and at any time, should register with the State Department through http://STEP.state.gov/ so that the U.S. Embassy can provide timely and important American citizen services information.
