McCaul: Drastically Increasing Refugee Cap “Undermines the Integrity of America’s Immigration System”

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on May 5, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has released the following statement following the Biden Administration’s announcement it would increase the cap on refugees from 15,000 to 62,500.

“People who have legitimate claims of persecution should be able to apply for asylum through the proper channels. But arbitrarily quadrupling the refugee cap for political purposes, while ignoring its deficiencies, undermines the integrity of America’s immigration system. Now is the time to address the growing humanitarian crisis at our border - not create more confusion for Border Patrol agents and send mixed signals that will only encourage more vulnerable people into harm’s way.".
