LIEBERMAN PRAISES ADMINISTRATION’S DECLASSIFICATION OF CYBER SECURITY PLANS

The following press release was published by the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on March 3, 2010. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON-Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Wednesday released the following statement on the Administration’s plan to declassify portions of the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI), a multi-agency, 12-step plan primarily focused on securing the federal government’s cyber networks and systems:

“The Administration deserves credit for taking the long-overdue step of declassifying portions of the CNCI. Two years ago, when this initiative began, I asked that more information about it be made public to allow Congress, the private sector, and the American public to better understand what the initiative would involve.

“My hope is that the Administration’s actions will increase collaboration between the government and the private sector and pave the way for more effective Congressional oversight. Given the nature of the cyber security threat, the American people should be given the chance to learn more about the attacks that strike our cyber networks every day and the steps the government is taking to protect against these attacks. More transparency and information-sharing with Congress, the private sector, and the American people can only add to the success of our cyber security efforts."
