FEDERAL CONFERENCE SPENDING GUIDELINES INTENDED TO DETER RECKLESSNESS WITH TAXPAYER DOLLARS

The following press release was published by the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on May 11, 2012. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON - Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Friday issued the following statement in reaction to new guidelines announced by the Administration on federal agency spending on conferences, travel, and real estate.

“I appreciate the Administration’s quick action in issuing new guidelines to reduce travel costs and strengthen agency accountability for spending on conferences. Requiring agencies to post their conference spending online should be a major deterrent to the kind of reckless spending that occurred at GSA’s western regions conference. These guidelines are a serious effort to save and eliminate the abhorrent waste, abuse, and mismanagement of taxpayer dollars. "
