The Federal Aviation Administration has instituted a new rule to improve and modernize training requirements for aviation maintenance technician schools.

The goal of the new system is to ensure new aviation technicians learn from a curriculum that aligns with current industry standards, according to a May 26 news release.

“These improvements will help us educate the future workforce and meet the demands of the evolving aviation community,” Federal Aviation Administration Deputy Administrator A. Bradley Mims said in the release.

With industry standards changing, schools must change the curriculum to keep students adequately trained and ready to do the job that’s needed, the release reported. For the most part, the change is coming from the integration of new technology.

According to the FAA, the previous requirements for aviation maintenance technician schools were almost 50 years old and the standards limited schools from aligning the curricula with modern industry standards.

In 2020, Congress directed the FAA to adopt new rules for issuing aviation maintenance technician school certificates and associated ratings as part of the Aircraft Certification, Safety and Accountability Act, according to the news release.

This requirement formally adopts those requirements and revises the general operating rules for the holders of aviation maintenance technician school certificates and ratings, with the final rule set to take effect four months after it is published in the Federal Register, the release reported.
