Pallone and Schakowsky Applaud Enactment of Bill to Protect Babies from Dangerous Sleeping Products

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Chair Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following joint statement today after President Biden signed H.R. 3182, the Safe Sleep for Babies Act of 2021, introduced by Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), into law:

“Despite pediatricians and consumer safety advocates warning of their danger, hazardous baby products like inclined sleepers and crib bumpers are still in stores and online where soon-to-be parents, excited grandparents, and well-meaning friends may unknowingly purchase them. Being a new parent can be hard enough and keeping our newborns safe is a goal we all share. The Safe Sleep for Babies Act will ban these dangerous products and keep them off the market, providing families with the peace of mind they deserve when purchasing new products for their newborns.

“We commend Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee Vice Chair Cárdenas for his relentless work on this legislation that will protect babies and promote safe sleep practices. We’re thrilled President Biden signed the bill into law today and look forward to continuing to work with his Administration on implementing it in the coming months.”

The Safe Sleep for Babies Act, which came out of the Energy and Commerce Committee, passed the House in June 2021 and the Senate earlier this month.
