An Orlando framing company has been cited for failing to comply with building code requirements and a roof truss manufacturer’s specification, leading to a collapse that caused fatal injuries to a 67-year-old worker.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited Top Rank Construction for failing to follow safety standards by ensuring the trusses were braced to resist buckling, leaning or collapsing when the fatality occurred at an Orange city building site Nov. 8, 2021, according to a news release.
“The risks associated with installing roof trusses are well known in the construction industry, and yet Top Rank Construction failed to follow established requirements to ensure the work was done safely,” the said OSHA's acting area office director Heather Sanders in Jacksonville, Florida, according to the release.
Top Rank failed to use a fall protection system and let workers anchor personal fall arrest systems to individual trusses, the release said. The agency proposed $18,853 in penalties.
Fulcrum Construction Group of Daphne, Alabama, was cited by OSHA as the worksite’s general contractor for a serious violation for failing to protect workers from fall hazards. The agency assessed the company $10,151 in proposed penalties.
The companies have 15 business days from receipt of their citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
