Peter Lord, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Africa, Sudan, and South Sudan in the Bureau of African Affairs.

Peter previously served as the Director of the Office of Southern African Affairs (2020-2021), Deputy Chief of Mission at Embassy Windhoek, Namibia (2017-2020), Deputy Director and Acting Director of the Office of East African Affairs (2015-2017), Political Counselor at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations (2012-2014), and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Mission to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2010-2012).

Peter has also had diplomatic assignments in Malawi, Syria, Iraq, and the United Kingdom. He served for a year as the State Department’s Cullom Davis Foreign Service Fellow at Columbia University and participated in the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship on exchange to the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Peter hails from Florida and holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and French literature and a master’s degree in strategic studies. He speaks French and some Arabic.
