The Federal Aviation Administration is kicking off its Be ACT recruitment drive to hire the next generation of air traffic controllers for the aviation industry.

According to a June 8 FAA news release, prospective candidates who are U.S. citizens can apply June 24-27.

“As aerospace technology continues to grow, we need people to join the FAA to ensure our airspace continues to be the safest in the world,” A. Bradley Mims, FAA deputy administrator, said in the news release. “We are looking for a diverse pool of candidates who are ready to rise to the challenge and become air traffic controllers.”

According to the FAA news release, in 2021 the administration received applications and other underrepresented demographics, and it hopes to see the same diversity in this year’s pool of applications. The release noted the FAA will tap a digital strategy to reach out to diverse organizations while hosting conversations on Instagram and with opening a dialogue with social media influencers.

Moreover, the FAA news release noted air traffic controllers play a key role in aviation as they keep tabs on air traffic and ensure airplanes land without incident.

There are currently about 14,000 workers who oversee an average of 45,000 flights daily with 5,000 aircraft in the skies during peak traffic hours, according to the FAA news release.
