Groot: 'Cyr will continue to provide excellent leadership for the Hanford Patrol team' as new chief

The Department of Energy’s Environmental Management Richland Operations Office and contractor Hanford Mission Integration Solutions has appointed Lorin Cyr as the new chief of Hanford Patrol.

Cyr, according to a June 7 DOE news release, joined Hanford Patrol in 1985, spending most of his time as deputy chief of operations. He reportedly worked with dogs in the Army and brought that passion with him, starting out as a K-9 officer.

“I have the utmost confidence Chief Cyr will continue to provide excellent leadership for the Hanford Patrol team and the protection of the people and assets at Hanford,” former Chief Casey Groot said in the release.

Cyr reportedly developed training requirements and has been a member of the tactical response team. In the release, Brian Stickney, Richland Operations Office's deputy manager and COO, noted each chief of Hanford Patrol must possess knowledge of the entire site, including all of the buildings and any current activities.

Stickney said he is confident that Cyr “will continue exercising strong leadership of our highly trained protective force that oversees all materials and assets on the Hanford site,” according to the release.

During his 37-year career, Cyr has seen the site move from defense production to cleanup operations and waste vitrification, and he has witnessed many of these changes firsthand. He pointed out in the news release that Hanford Patrol was the first DOE site to form a K-9 and traffic programs as well as an elite force special response team.

“It was also the first to have resources like helicopters and boats,” he said in the release. “In that same tradition, I look forward to introducing new technology to assist current officers, such as mobile data terminals or computer-aided dispatch.”

DOE Environmental Management lauded Cyr on social media.

"Congratulations to @HanfordSite's new chief of Hanford Patrol Lorin Cyr who has been with the Patrol since 1985," the organization posted on Twitter. "Chief Cyr will be carrying on a tradition of experienced leadership for the protective force that safeguards the site.”
