The U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services recently issued a call for nominations for the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.
The committee's goal will be to analyze current scientific data in preparation for the 2025–30 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, according to a June 14 USDA news release.
“The science reviewed by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee provides an essential foundation for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans,” Adm Rachel L. Levine, M.D., HHS assistant secretary for health and head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, stated in the release.
According to the release, the USDA and HHS are attempting to establish a committee with a diverse range of knowledge, experience and education. The departments also want the committees to reflect the "country's racial, ethnic, gender and geographic diversity."
"We are committed to bringing together interdisciplinary experts with a variety of professional experience who will ensure that the guidance in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is inclusive of the U.S. population,” Stacy Dean, deputy under secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services at USDA stated, according to the release.
Once established, the committee's evidence review will reportedly concentrate on the effects of nutrition and health during the lifespan of U.S. citizens, the release reported. In addition, the committee will investigate the relationship between diet and the prevalence of obesity.
“Our goal is to appoint a committee that will make science-driven, dietary recommendations with health equity in mind," Dean said in the release.
The committee plans to analyze all evidence using three methodologies which include, "Nutrition Evidence Systematic Review systematic reviews, food pattern modeling and data analysis," the release reported. The deadline for submitting nominations is 11:59 p.m. ET July 15.
