BLM Lakeview District Poster Contest: Local Students Educate Through Artwork

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Pacific Northwest Four Wheel Drive Association and Tread Lightly recently partnered to host a Be Prepared poster contest highlighting “Know Before You Go” and “The 10 Essentials” for Lake County elementary students.

Connecting kids to public lands connects them to America’s natural and cultural heritage. Interpretive presentations were held at the Paisley, North Lake, and A.D. Hay schools in mid-May. Students were educated on the role that being prepared has in recreating responsibly. Subject matter included asking questions before you go, bringing the right supplies, and knowing how to tailer the two to different activities.

After each presentation, students were invited to design a work of art illustrating the importance of practicing responsible outdoor ethics and enter it into the contest. A total of 46 posters were entered in this year’s competition and reviewed by a panel of judges. The judges evaluated each poster using the criteria of creativity, originality and messaging.

Terence Price from North Lake School and Addalee Tague from A.D. Hay Elementary are this year’s Grand Prize Winners. Grand prize winners received $100 and a backpack for their exceptional artwork.

Additional contest prizes of $50 and a backpack were awarded to runner-up winners for their significant contributions:

Sarah Ryan – A.D. Hay Elementary - Runner Up

Zoey Baker – North Lake School - Runner Up

Josephine Cardoza – Paisley Charter School - Runner Up

Saren Ramming – Paisley Charter School - Runner Up

The posters designed by the grand prize winners will be placed on display at the BLM Lakeview District’s front desk, where they will be on view to the public. All remaining posters will be rotated through kiosks located at various BLM recreation sites across Lake County over the next year. Contest funding was generated from a fun run hosted by the Pacific Northwest Four Wheel Drive Association at the Christmas Valley Sand Dunes over Memorial Day weekend.
