Armed Services Committee and the bills it addressed on July 1

The Armed Services Committee handled H.R.8272, H.R.8280, H.R.8281 bills on July 1, according to the US Congress.

Bill H.R.8272 titled “To encourage the extraction and processing of rare earth elements and critical minerals in the United States, and for other purposes” was referred to the Committee on Armed Services and in addition to the Committee on Financial Services for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Elissa Slotkin with Michael Waltz as cosponsor.

Bill H.R.8280 titled “To prohibit the use of funds for the transfer or release of individuals detained at United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Afghanistan” was referred to the House Committee on Armed Services by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Michael Turner with Marc Veasey as cosponsor.

Bill H.R.8281 titled “To amend title 37, United States Code, to extend the authority to temporarily adjust the basic allowance for housing in certain areas” was referred to the House Committee on Armed Services by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Nikema Williams with Austin Scott, Marilyn Strickland as cosponsors.

The Armed Services Committee moves forward in some way on one bill per day.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
