Chairman Thompson Statement on the Supreme Court’s Decision Allowing the Biden Administration to End Trump’s Cruel ‘Remain in Mexico’ Policy

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Homeland Security on June 30. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON) - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on today’s decision from the Supreme Court allowing the Biden Administration to end the Trump Administration’s cruel and anti-immigrant Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), also known as ‘Remain in Mexico.’

“I applaud the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Biden Administration to finally terminate the abhorrent ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy and help address the humanitarian disaster the Trump Administration created at the border. This decision underscores that it is legal to seek asylum, despite Republicans misrepresenting the law and playing politics with the issue. The ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy was a stain on our longstanding tradition of protecting refugees and asylum seekers. I look forward to working with the Department of Homeland Security as it ends MPP and builds a just, effective, and humane asylum processing system."
