U.S. airlines carried 72.2 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers in April 2022, seasonally adjusted, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS), up 4.4% from March.
BTS reported 63.8 million domestic passengers and 8.4 million international passengers on U.S. airlines flights in April.

Two measures of U.S. airlines passenger enplanements
April seasonally adjusted
- System-wide enplanements (72.2M) were down 10.5% from the all-time high of 80.7 million reached in January 2020.
- Domestic enplanements (63.8M) were down 10% from the all-time high of 70.9 million reached in January 2020.
- International enplanements (8.4M) were down 14.2% from the all-time high of 9.78 million reached in October 2019.
- Systemwide enplanements (71.9M) were down 5.9% from the all-time April high (76.4) reached in 2019.
- Domestic enplanements (63.5M) were down 5.1% from the all-time April high (66.9) reached in 2019.
- International enplanements (8.4M) were down 11.5% from the all-time April high (9.5) reached in 2019.

Reporting Notes
Data are compiled from monthly reports filed with BTS by commercial U.S. air carriers detailing operations, passenger traffic and freight traffic. This release includes data received by BTS from 77 U.S. carriers as of July 6 for U.S. carrier scheduled civilian operations.

International totals in this press release consist of all U.S. carrier operations to and from the U.S. and from one foreign point to another foreign point. BTS has scheduled Aug. 11 for the release of Traffic data through May.
None of the data are from samples. Measures of statistical significance do not apply to the complete air traffic data.
