More Than Just a Good Back Scratch

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Trees provide many benefits to black bears. When frightened, a bear will often climb a tree. During mating season and to establish territorial boundaries bears will rub a tree with their neck, shoulders, back and even claw or bite the trunk to mark the tree with their musky bear scent. And then a tree can just provide the simple pleasure of a good place to scratch a back.
