U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite announced that JONATHAN RAMOS-VASQUEZ, age 27, a native of Honduras, pled guilty today to possession of a handgun by a person illegally present in the United States, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(5)(A).
According to court documents, on March 21, 2015, deputies from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office were given information that RAMOS was located at an address in Lafourche Parish. They were given permission to enter the residence and encountered RAMOS in his bedroom. Deputies spotted an Astra model A70, 9mm semi-automatic handgun next to RAMOS on his bed. The handgun had travelled in interstate commerce as it had been manufactured in Spain. RAMOS ultimately admitted that he was in the country illegally and that the handgun belonged to him. RAMOS had previously been deported from the United States on Oct. 26, 2011, and had not received permission from the Attorney General of the United States or the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to reenter.
RAMOS faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten years, as well as a fine of $250,000. United States District Court Judge Susie Morgan set sentencing for Nov. 2, 2016.
U.S. Attorney Polite praised the work of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri is in charge of the prosecution.
