United States Attorney Kenyen R. Brown of the Southern District of Alabama announced that George Steven Gray, 27, of Daphne, Alabama, was sentenced in federal court on Aug. 18, 2016, for discarding mail he was supposed to deliver. Court documents reflect that batches of undelivered and unopened mail were recovered from a dumpster and a recycling bin in Fairhope during late November and early December of 2015. An investigation conducted by the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General revealed that Gray, a letter carrier delivering mail in the Fairhope area, had
Gray pled guilty to one count of discarding mail in March of 2016. United States District Court Judge William H. Steele pronounced the sentence, ordering the Gray serve a probationary term of two years. Gray will pay a $100 special mandatory assessment but no fine was imposed.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General. It was prosecuted in the United States Attorney’s Office by Assistant United States Attorney Gloria Bedwell.
