Gregory J. Haanstad, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, announced that on Sept. 20, 2016, a federal grand jury returned a one-count indictment against John Mendoza (age: 39) of Keshena charging him with a violation of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (18 United States Code Section 2250). If convicted of the offense, the defendant faces a sentence of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and from 5 years up to lifetime Supervised Release.
According to the indictment, Mendoza, failed to comply with the sex offender registry from June 2016 through Aug. 11, 2016.
The case was investigated by the Menominee Tribal Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Corrections Sex Offender Registry Program, United States Probation Office, and United States Marshals Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Maier.
An indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. Every defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. # #
