MADISON, WIS. -- Scott C. Blader, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Tyrae Ford, 40, of Janesville, Wisconsin, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William Conley to 10 years in federal prison for possessing heroin with intent to distribute. This term of imprisonment will be followed by eight years of supervised release. Ford pleaded guilty to this charge on March 20, 2018.
On Jan. 1, 2018, Wisconsin State Patrol officers stopped Ford’s car near DeForest, Wisconsin. The car was ultimately searched and officers found more than 600 grams of heroin in a backpack in the trunk. Ford was interviewed and admitted he intended to sell the heroin to users in the Janesville, Madison, and La Crosse areas.
Ford has a lengthy criminal history, including two prior felony drug offenses and was released from prison for one of those charges just six months before this offense. Judge Conley acknowledged that Ford had an unfortunate history but found Ford was a danger to society because he sold heroin.
The charge against Ford was the result of an investigation conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, and Wisconsin State Patrol. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.
