MADISON, WIS. -- Scott C. Blader, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Luis Martinez, 43, Palmdale, California, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to 84 months in federal prison for conspiring to distribute methamphetamine. Martinez pleaded guilty to this charge on March 20, 2018.
The amount attributable to Martinez was approximately two pounds of pure methamphetamine, though Judge Conley described this as a conservative calculation. During sentencing, Judge Conley described Martinez as the supplier of large amounts of nearly pure methamphetamine to the Dutton drug distribution network in Wisconsin via the United States Postal Service. Investigative material identified similar patterns of mail activity from the defendant in other areas of the United States, and the search of his residence at the time of arrest suggested that he engaged in the wholesale distribution of large amounts of methamphetamine and cocaine outside of the Wisconsin conspiracy.
Luis Martinez and ten other individuals were charged for their roles in this methamphetamine distribution conspiracy. Martinez is the tenth to be sentenced.
The charge against Martinez was the result of an investigation conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation; Drug Enforcement Administration- Madison, Wisconsin and Los Angeles, California; Dane County Narcotics Task Force; Dane County Sheriff’s Department; Madison Police Department; UW-Madison Police Department; U.S. Postal Inspection Service; Sauk County Drug Task Force; Richland-Iowa-Grant Drug Task Force; Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office; State Line Area Narcotics Team; and Rock County Special Investigations Unit. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys David Reinhard and Diane Schlipper.
