Pine Ridge Man Sentenced to Ten Years in Prison for Abusive Sexual Contact

United States Attorney Ron Parsons announced that a Pine Ridge, South Dakota, man convicted of Abusive Sexual Contact was sentenced by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court.

James Janis, age 39, was sentenced on Aug. 2, 2019, to 10 years in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Janis was indicted by a federal grand jury in April 2018. The charge related to Janis forcibly engaging in sexual contact with a juvenile victim at the White Clay Dam in Pine Ridge on Nov. 17, 2017.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen prosecuted the case.

Janis was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
