United States Attorney Dennis Holmes announced that a Fort Thompson, South Dakota, woman convicted of Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding a Federal Officer was sentenced on Feb. 14, 2022, by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court.
Jennifer Surrounded, age 36, was sentenced to 22 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
Surrounded was indicted by a federal grand jury on March 9, 2021. She pled guilty on Nov. 16, 2021.
The conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred on Feb. 12, 2021, in Fort Thompson. Surrounded assaulted an officer with a knife while the officer was engaged in the performance of his official duties.
This case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs - Office of Justice Services, Crow Creek Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case.
Surrounded was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
