In an effort to recognize small businesses across the country and boost the economy, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) is awarding $19.6 million in grants to 24 shipyards in 19 states as part of its Small Shipyard Grant Program.
According to a U.S. Department of Transportation news release, recipients can use the funds to boost local employment, modernize equipment to jumpstart productivity and gain a competitive edge in a global market.
“Small businesses are the lifeblood of the American economy, and small shipyards play a critical role in America’s maritime industry, helping us get the goods we depend on every day,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in the news release. “These grants will help modernize small shipyards in communities across the country, creating and protecting local jobs, strengthening America’s maritime industry, and securing our economic future.”
According to the news release, MARAD’s Small Shipyard Grant Program has awarded more than $282 million to about 300 shipyards across 32 states and U.S. territories.
Moreover, Maritime Administrator Ann Phillips pointed out in the news release that they will help the shipyards enhance critical infrastructure and create jobs.
Phillips also noted in the news release that with an increased number of ships and other crafts using the nation’s waterways with upgraded equipment, productivity will get a boost. She pointed out in the release that boosting the shipyard industry drives growth in the domestic maritime landscape.
