Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Health Subcommittee Chairwoman Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA) released the following joint statement today after the House of Representatives passed two public health research bills:
“We’re pleased the House passed two important public health bills from the Energy and Commerce Committee today. The first bill supports critical research for pediatric diseases. Named after Gabriella Miller, who lost her life too early to cancer, this bipartisan bill seeks to develop breakthroughs in pediatric cancer treatment through genomic research as we continue our unrelenting battle against childhood cancer and disease.
“The second bill would help fill the gap of research on the health effects of marijuana and cannabis products. It expands much-needed research on the safety and efficacy of marijuana products that millions of Americans are using for medical purposes.”
The House of Representatives passed the following two bills:
H.R. 623, the “Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0,” was introduced by Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) and 17 original cosponsors. The bill reauthorizes a pediatric disease research initiative within the National Institutes of Health, the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Program. The bill passed by an en bloc vote of 336-90.
H.R. 8454, the “The Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act,” was introduced by Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and six other original cosponsors. The bill would streamline the registration process for conducting research with marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act and maintains appropriate oversight and control by the Department of Health and Human Services and Drug Enforcement Administration. The bill passed on the House Floor by a vote of 325-95.
