Chairman Lynch Issues Statement on Death of Ayman al-Zawahiri

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on Aug. 1. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, D.C. -Today, Rep. Stephen F. Lynch, Chairman of the Subcommittee on National Security, released the following statement after President Biden announced that al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a counterterrorism operation in Kabul, Afghanistan:

“I applaud President Biden and his Administration for taking decisive action to target Ayman al-Zawahiri in an ‘over-the-horizon’ counterterrorism operation in Afghanistan. Zawahiri has led al Qaeda since the death of Osama bin Laden in 2011 and is responsible for plotting terrorist attacks around the world, including the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

“When President Biden announced the end of the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan last August, he was unambiguous in his warning to our enemies: the United States will never stop hunting those who threaten American citizens or the U.S. homeland. Today, a dangerous terrorist has been brought to justice, and the United States, and the world, is safer as a result."
