Bills addressed by Judiciary Committee on Aug. 4

The Judiciary Committee handled S.4770 bill on Aug. 4, according to the US Congress.

Bill S.4770 titled “A bill to prohibit any employee or contractor of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement or the Department of Health and Human Services from transporting any alien across State lines for the purpose of procuring an abortion for such alien” was read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary by the Senate. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Roger Marshall with Marsha Blackburn, Mike Braun, Steve Daines, Cindy Hyde-Smith, Jim Inhofe, James Lankford, Mike Lee, Rick Scott, Roger Wicker as cosponsors.

The Judiciary Committee moves forward in some way on three bills per day, taking one action on average per day.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
