MADRAS, Ore. - The Bureau of Reclamation is temporarily closing West Shore Recreation Area at Haystack Reservoir April 9 through May 4, to pave the roads, campsites, and parking lots at the reservoir. Haystack Reservoir is located about 10 miles south of Madras.
The project will use a phased approach to complete the paving, and the public will still have options to camp and access water during the partial closures. The North Shore Fishing Pier day-use area will remain open for day-use recreation activities. North Shore is open year-round from dawn to dusk, with an accessible fishing pier to enjoy fishing, sightseeing, and access to the reservoir. Parking at North Shore is free of charge. The South Shore Group Campground will remain open for the 2018 season.
Haystack Reservoir borders Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson counties and is impounded by Haystack Dam, which was built in 1957. It is owned by Reclamation and operated by the North Unit Irrigation District that supplies irrigation water to the area.
