CARSON CITY, Nev. - The Bureau of Reclamation is finishing Safety of Dams modification work at Stampede Dam and will reopen the section of Dog Valley Road over the dam starting Nov. 1, 2018. The road has been closed since April 2017. Additional work will continue into November but does not require a road closure.
This Safety of Dams project raised the crest of Stampede Dam by 11 1/2 feet to protect the dam and downstream populations from extreme flood events. Stampede Dam and Reservoir, part of Reclamation’s Truckee Storage Project, are located on the Little Truckee River, about 6 miles east of Truckee and 27 miles west of Reno.
The road over and around Stampede Dam is not plowed during the winter and, under normal winter conditions, the area is inaccessible due to snow.
Reclamation is also planning to modify Boca Dam from May 2019 to September 2020. The project will require a road closure over Boca Dam. For more information about the Boca Project, please refer to the following website: www.usbr.gov/mp/sod/projects/boca.
