Raimondo: 'Remain vigilant as we enter the peak months of the hurricane season'

The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be above average, according to the Climate Prediction Center’s annual mid-season update.

The center, a part of the National Weather Service, released its projections in an Aug. 4 news release.

“I urge everyone to remain vigilant as we enter the peak months of hurricane season,” Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said, according to the release.

She said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration experts will aid communities in their quest to become climate-ready and hurricane resilient by providing science, data and services for the rest of the hurricane season and into the future, the release reported.

“We’re just getting into the peak months of August through October for hurricane development, and we anticipate that more storms are on the way,” NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad, Ph.D, said in the release. “NOAA stands ready to deliver timely and accurate forecasts and warnings to help communities prepare in advance of approaching storms.”

The likelihood of an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season drops slightly from the 65% forecast in May to a 60% chance as of Aug. 4, the release reported. Chances for a below-normal season were only at 10%, according to the Climate Prediction Center’s update.
