John Abowd, the U.S. Census Bureau’s chief scientist and associate director for research and methodology, is one of five recipients of the 2022 Champion of Freedom Awards. The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) award recognizes individuals and organizations for their commitment to safeguarding the right to privacy, open government and democratic values with courage and integrity.
Abowd received the award for his role in transforming the Census Bureau’s disclosure avoidance system (through introduction of differential privacy) to better protect respondent confidentiality. More information on Abowd’s accomplishments and efforts is available on our website.
