BLM issues closure order for Matt Staff Road Fire

The Bureau of Land Management’s Butte Field Office is closing some of its public lands for public safety and to support fire operations for the Matt Staff fire near Helena.

The closure order takes effect immediately for all BLM-managed lands impacted by the 1,500-acre Matt Staff Road fire in the Spokane Hills north of Highway 287 and south of Canyon Ferry Road. The BLM asks the public to avoid the area while fire engines, equipment, scoopers and helicopters are actively suppressing the fire.

The Matt Staff RD Fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. yesterday, and a U.S. Forest Service Type III fire team of about 40 assumed command of the fire today. As a reminder, drones and private aircraft are prohibited from flying in the fire area, per a Tactical Flight Restriction currently in place.
