U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent his best wishes to the Ecuadorian people on the anniversary of their nation’s declaration of independence.

He said the United States stands proudly with Ecuador, a democratic leader in the hemisphere, according to an Aug. 10 State Department news release.

“On behalf of the government of the United States and the American people, I send warm greetings as you celebrate the 213th anniversary of your declaration of independence,” Blinken said in the release.

The two nations worked closely on regional security and inclusive economic development during the past year, work that grew their bilateral relationship, he said, the release reported.

“During my October 2021 visit to Quito, I witnessed firsthand the ingenuity of Ecuadorian entrepreneurs and the commitment of the Ecuadorian people to defend human rights and fight corruption,” Blinken said, according to the release.

Blinken also commended the nation’s leadership and hospitality as it plays host to migrants and refugees in the hundreds of thousands who seek a better life. Ecuador’s contribution to handle the issue of climate change was seen as significant, according to the release.

“President Lasso’s historic announcement this past year to vastly expand the marine reserve around the Galapagos Islands protects vital fisheries and this important world heritage site for generations to come,” Blinken said, the release reported.

A strong foundation comes from the strong ties and values the two nations share to continue the growth of their relationship, he said, according to the release.
