Mouritsen: BLM committed ‘to investing in clean and reliable renewable energy projects’

The 230-megawatt Desert Sunlight Battery Energy Storage System near Desert Center in Riverside County, Calif., is fully operational.

Located on 94 acres of public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the battery storage system will provide “230 megawatts of energy storage and increase grid integration of renewable electricity produced by the Desert Sunlight Solar Farm,” an Aug. 16 news release reported.

“Battery storage systems like this one play an important role in meeting energy demands and increasing energy security,” Karen Mouritsen,  BLM California state director, said in the news release. “The BLM remains committed to investing in clean and reliable renewable energy projects to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Saur Energy called the Desert Sunlight Solar Farm the fifth largest solar park in the United States. Construction began in 2011 on facility located in Riverside County, California, and it was commissioned in 2015.

The battery energy storage system facility is just south of the Desert Sunlight Project operations and maintenance building and connects to the on-site Desert Sunlight substation, the BLM National NEPA Register said.

“In 2021, Sunlight Solar LLC received authorization from the BLM to construct the Desert Sunlight Battery Energy Storage System within the Desert Sunlight Solar facilities,” the release said.
